Biophysical Characteristics of Vermicompost from a Mixture of Oil Palm Leaves and Goat Manure Using African Night Crawler Earthworms
Abstrak
Oil palm leaves and goat manure are common organic wastes that can be effectively utilized as raw materials for vermicomposting. This study aimed to identify the optimal combination of oil palm leaves and goat manure in producing vermicompost with desirable biophysical characteristics in accordance with the Indonesian National Standard (SNI 7763:2024).The research was conducted from October to December 2024 at the Composting Facility, Faculty of Agriculture and Animal Science, Universitas Islam Negeri Sultan Syarif Kasim Riau. A Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with a single factor was employed, consisting of five treatments: 1000 g oil palm leaves, 1000 g goat manure, 500 g oil palm leaves + 500 g goat manure, 750 g oil palm leaves + 250 g goat manure, and 250 g oil palm leaves + 750 g goat manure. The parameters observed included temperature, color, odor, moisture content, particle size, particle density and Escherichia coli content. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) revealed that the combination of oil palm leaves and goat manure had a significant effect on several biophysical properties of the vermicompost, particularly on particle size and particle density. Moreover, the vermicompost was found to contain E. coli bacteria at levels that still complied with the SNI standard. The treatment using 1000 g of goat manure produced vermicompost with the most favorable characteristics in terms of odor, texture, temperature, color, and particle size, meeting the quality requirements specified in SNI 7763:2024.
