Abstrak

This study aimed to analyze the slaughter weight and carcass characteristics of ayam kampung on the
free-range system with the introduction of different vegetation. A total of 210 free-range chickens were used in a
completely randomized design (CRD) with four treatments and five replications. The treatments in this study consisted
of control treatment (intensive without vegetation), FRS + grass Brachiaria decumbens, FRS + grass Axonopus
compressus and FRS + legume Indigofera zollingeriana. Each treatment except the control was equipped with a
grazing paddock measuring 5x12 m. Each paddock is placed one portable cage measuring 2 m2. Entering the age of seven weeks, 12 chickens were reared in each paddock until the end of the study with a density of 6.67 m2 /bird. At the end of the study, after six weeks in paddock the chickens were slaughtered and carcass were measured. The results showed that all observation variables were significantly different. The chickens in the intensive system were superior in terms of cutting weight, carcass weight and breast percentage, while the free-range system was superior in the percentage of wings, back and thighs. Paddock of Indigofera zollingeriana is the best introduction of superior plants for the free-range system of ayam kampung.
