Social Dimension in Watermelon Cultivation: Case Study of Farmers Groups In Bina Widya Village Pekanbaru City

Watermelon cultivation is not only about the application of proper agricultural cultivation practices such as land management, selection of high-quality varieties, and strategic application of fertilizers, but is also shaped by social factors in farmer groups. Social factors caused social interactions, such as communication, social norms, and cooperation that contribute significantly to increasing productivity and sustainability of agricultural initiatives. The purpose of this study was to analyze the social interactions of watermelon farmers in farmer groups in terms of communication, social norms, and cooperation and to determine the relationship between watermelon cultivation and social interactions in watermelon farmer groups. The study was conducted for three months, namely November 2023-January 2024. This study was analyzed using a quantitative descriptive method. The study population was 40 people and the entire population was a sample. The sampling was carried out by purposive sampling. The results of the study showed that social interaction in farmer groups in Bina Widya Village (Amara Jaya and Karya Mandiri) in the communication aspect showed an average value of 39.37%, social norms 45.75%, and cooperation had an average value of 46.4%, all indicators of social norms and cooperation were classified as quite good, except for communication which had a bad category, then between cultivation techniques and social interaction of watermelon farmer groups there was a positive and significant correlation.
