Abstrak

This study uses a mix of cattle rumen contents and pineapple peel waste to investigate the optimal carbon-to-nitrogen (C/N) ratio in biogas production. Three C/N ratios (33.20, 34, 35) were tested using a completely randomised design, each repeated six times for reliable results. The findings highlight the significant impact of C/N ratio variations on biogas characteristics, including pH levels, organic carbon and nitrogen contents, C/N ratio, and flame duration. Initial pH values were near-neutral but increased to a more basic level at a C/N ratio of 35, indicating significant microbial shifts during fermentation (P<0.01). A higher C/N ratio correlated with more organic carbon available for fermentation while inversely related to nitrogen content, suggesting lower nitrogen levels in pineapple peel waste at higher C/N ratios. Importantly, higher C/N ratios significantly favoured organic material availability over nitrogen (P<0.01), creating optimal conditions for efficient biogas production. Flame duration also increased with higher C/N ratios, peaking at a C/N ratio of 34, identified as producing the highest quality biogas. In conclusion, this study determines that a C/N ratio of 34 provides the best conditions for biogas production, offering valuable insights for optimising biogas production processes and advancing sustainable organic waste management, contributing to cleaner and more efficient renewable energy solutions.
