Areca Nut Cultivation Techniques and the Dynamics of Social Interactions of Farmer Groups in Rangsang District, Meranti Islands Regency

Abstrak

The productivity of areca nut plants is not only influenced by the cultivation techniques applied by the members of the farmer group, but it is also influenced by the dynamics of social interactions between the members. This study aims to describe the cultivation techniques of areca nut farmers and analyze the social interactions of areca nut farmers in their farmer groups (both aspects of communication, social norms, and cooperation) in Repan Village, Rangsang District, Meranti Islands Regency, and to determine the relationship between the application of cultivation techniques and social interactions for areca nut farmer groups. This study was located in Repan Village (the location was chosen because the area is a center for areca nut production). The study was conducted for 3 months (November 2025-January 2025). The research method used was descriptive quantitative, the number of respondents was 40 people (respondents were taken through a census). The data used: primary and secondary data. Analysis of social interactions related to aspects of communication, social norms, individual cooperation in groups. The results of the study indicate that the implementation of areca nut cultivation techniques by members of the Usaha Bersama and Mekar Jaya farmer groups is classified as poor, with an average score of 37.85% (farmer members have not implemented cultivation techniques in accordance with the standard operating procedures established by the Ministry of Agriculture). Meanwhile, member interactions within the Usaha Bersama and Mekar Jaya farmer groups, in terms of communication, social norms, and cooperation, are classified as quite good (scoring 42.16%, 45.87%, and 46.25%, respectively). Furthermore, there is a positive and significant correlation between cultivation techniques and social interaction within the Usaha Bersama and Mekar Jaya farmer groups.
