Abstrak

Oil palm fronds have nutritional potential as animal feed. Due to their high fiber content, fermentation into forage silage is necessary. Leucaena will be added to palm frond silage to increase its protein content. This study aims to evaluate the physical quality of the silage, including aroma, mold presence, color, texture, and pH. The research will be conducted from December 2024 to January 2025 at the Laboratory of Nutrition and Feed Technology, Faculty of Agriculture and Animal Science, Sultan Syarif Kasim Islamic State University, Riau. The study is experimental, using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with four treatments and five replications: T1 = 100% palm fronds, T2 = 95% oil palm frond leaves + 5% Leucaena, T3 = 90% oil palm frond leaves + 10% Leucaena, and T4 = 85% oil palm frond leaves + 15% Leucaena. Observed parameters include aroma, mold presence, color, texture, and pH. The collected data will be analyzed using various methods with a 5% Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT) for follow-up comparisons. The results showed that the Effect of Leucaena addition on oil palm frond silage had a highly significant effect (P<0.01) on aroma, mold presence, color, and texture, but no significant effect (P>0.05) on pH. The addition of Leucaena at varying levels to oil palm frond leaf silage improved its physical quality, with color values ranging from 3.543 to 3.450 (yellowish-green), aroma from 3.652 to 3.537 (sour), mold presence from 2.866 to 2.802 (moderate), texture from 3.780 to 3.723 (firm), and pH from 3.97 to 4.09 (good quality). The conclusion of this study is that the treatment with 95% oil palm frond + 5% (lamtoro) + 5% corn flour + 5% molasses produced the best results in terms of aroma, color, and texture compared to other treatments.
